Donald used to boast to his drinking pals how he could stay employed at a forty hour per week job and get inebriated almost every night. Regrettably, after maintaining this unhealthy lifestyle for about seven years, he started to experience various alcohol related difficulties.

And in all candor he grasped the fact that he was going through the adverse effects of alcohol addiction or alcohol abuse and that he was too young to waste his life on abusive and unhealthy drinking. So initially he tried to drink in moderation. Sadly, he soon grasped the fact that he lost all control after drinking his first alcoholic beverage. Since this was a circumstance that was repeated again and again, this obviously troubled him a great deal. In fact, he started to wonder if he was manifesting some of the stages of alcoholism.

After articulating his alcohol drinking problems and his abusive and unhealthy drinking with his lady friend, he eventually made up his mind to make an appointment to see his healthcare practitioner. When Donald saw his physician, he openly stated that he has been drinking in an abusive manner, that he may be manifesting behavior that is representative of the various alcoholism stages, and that he wants to abstain from drinking. He then mentioned that drinking responsibly and in moderation does not work for him and as a consequence, he wants to learn how he can live an alcohol-free life.

Donald also told his healthcare professional about his depression and how this mental health issue was adversely influencing his relationship with his girlfriend. His healthcare practitioner referred Donald to Doctor Mayer, an alcohol and drug addiction psychologist, who motivated Donald to enter into a drug and alcohol rehab facility as an in-patient for alcohol detoxification and alcohol treatment. Fortunately, Donald would also be able to get medical treatment for his depression at this treatment center.

After five months of comprehensive rehab, Donald left the in-patient rehabilitation clinic and continued his recovery via going to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and via outpatient therapy. Inspired to change his life in a more productive manner, Donald joined a fitness center and started working out three or four times per week. Within four months Donald was a new man. He was in shape, he was eating nutritious meals, he was not depressed anymore, and most significant of all, he remained sober for several months. He also did not resort to angry outbursts, he became more patient, and he became a more loving individual in his relationship with his lady friend. In brief, refraining from drinking was the best decision Donald had ever made.
