I am often amazed to see the how grand and outlandish the fashion industry has turned into. For some reason it is tough for me to comprehend people and their complete love for clothes. Don't misunderstand me! I like a decent pair of jeans as much as the next guy, but you will not catch me handing over hundreds of bucks for a pair of pants, or even for plus size coats, which can be pricey. Forget it. Not that my preferences have any effect on the fashion world whatsoever. Oodles of youthful people are attending fashion styling and marketing schools to better learn the industry. Hey, I can not say that I blame them. There is a great deal of money to be made there. I'm pretty sure Tom Ford is hungry nowadays.

When I asked my teen-age daughter what topic she wished to pursue, she began rambling on about fashion styling and merchandising. Hmm, big surprise! What teenage girl isn't interested in the style industry? And I thought - hey, maybe she can get me a good deal on my plus size coats! As far as i can see, they all go ga-ga over clothes, shoes, and accents. Anyhow, she began taking a secondary school course in style design and marketing her senior year. Unfortunately she loathed it. Now she is a bit torn about her future plans. She still dreams of a job in the clothing industry, but is naturally worried about regardless of whether she'll like it. I told her to give fashion design and merchandising another shot when she heads off to college next year. And no one said she had to delve into this particular aspect of the style industry. There are a few alternatives out there. She could market swimsuits, jeans, evening wear, plus size coats, wedding attire, avant garde fashion...the possibilities are end-less.

It is certainly a rough business. If you really want to see how things work, look at the Style net-work at times in order to see true clothing designers in their world. Or you can watch that little reality series "The Hills." Even though the main character in this show has plenty of cash coming in from her parents, she's getting a good dose of the fashion styling and marketing world. It's definitely not all glam and glitz at the outset, but I am sure any money-making clothes designer can tell you that. You have to be willing to work really hard and vie with the many.
