Teenage Alcohol Abuse, The Interrelationship Between Abusive Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Need For Coping Skills Education

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous substance abuse authorities assert that wine, liquor, and beer advertisements produced by the media are a fundamental reason for the rise in teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol dependency authorities assert that the increase in teenage alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and convenience of wine, beer, and liquor in our society. Still other alcohol abuse consultants assert that quite a few of our adolescents engage in hazardous drinking because of the increased fretfulness that they go through.

From a somewhat different outlook, due to the fact that both parents in more than a few families work full or part-time, the lack of parental supervision definitely has to play a significant role in the rise in teenage alcohol abuse. And as a final point, different alcohol dependency specialists state that the rise in teen alcohol abuse is due, at some level, to our lenient society.

One aspect of adolescent alcohol abuse that appears to be somewhat incomplete in the chemical dependency research literature, nonetheless, is the lack of educational courses that teach teenagers how to enhance their coping skills so that their unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior is drastically diminished or exterminated. More specifically, science has demonstrated that there is an indirect link between poor coping skills and abusive and excessive drinking.

Essentially, this means that the worse the coping skills, the higher the prevalence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is an accurate declaration, why isn't coping skills training an important part of the academic curriculum in all of our junior high schools, elementary schools, and high schools?

Let us create a scenario for for the purpose of illumination. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are trained how to develop solid coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school. In such a society, when life gets demanding, students who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a healthier and more rewarding way, as opposed to others who fail to put their coping skills into operation.

Stated differently, students who reveal excellent coping skills will be more able to think proactively and exhibit first-class decision making as opposed to adolescents who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to implement first-rate coping skills, are drawn to the "quick fix" of hazardous drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, in addition, if teens not only received top shelf coping skills training but also obtained an extraordinary education that highlighted the short term and long term negative costs associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills training, it is emphasized, would help adolescents steer clear of the clear charm associated with youth drinking and, as a consequence, would significantly lessen the hazardous drinking behavior undertaken by the youth in our country.

There are definitely more than a few valid reasons why so many of our teens drink in an excessive manner. Such a complex subject demands an all-inclusive and more meaningful response by our politicians, parents, educators, and students so that our teens can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more productive and accountable way rather than gravitating to abusive and excessive drinking to solve their difficulties.
